Was the Y‑Chromosome of the Tang Imperial Li D‑Y14813?


Some analysts hold that the Y‑chromosome of the Tang imperial house of Li was D‑Y14813. Was it?

Two frameworks of thought exist on this question. The first is the ancient‑sample empirical‑testing framework, which holds that confirmation of any family’s genetic lineage must rely on physical testing of samples recovered by archaeological excavation. The second is the major‑clade‑expansion framework, which maintains that, in the absence of ancient samples, lineages of a given historical period may be used to identify and attribute a historical family. A key point: those who adhere strictly to the first framework will not engage in debate over this issue at all; anyone arguing about the question must implicitly adopt the second framework. I will therefore apply the major‑clade‑expansion framework to lay out the full chain of reasoning.

I. Misconceptions regarding the common‑ancestor date of the Western Xia

Some assign D‑Y14813 to the imperial family of Li Yuanhao of the Western Xia. This claim originated with 23Mofang’s assignment for this haplogroup and later became widespread online. Yet under the major‑clade‑expansion framework, this argument does not hold. The coalescence‑expansion date of D‑Y14813 does not align with the founding of Western Xia. Analysis of modern‑user data from 23Mofang dates the formation of D‑Y14813 to 1410 years ago, whereas Western Xia was founded 987 years ago, a gap of roughly 400 years. To argue that the ancestors of the Western Xia Li, namely Tuoba Chici, produced far more descendants under an unstable pre‑state polity than the fully‑established Western Xia imperial house, which then ceased to expand, contradicts basic demographic logic. If D‑Y14813 is attributed to Western Xia Li by major‑clade‑expansion reasoning, then by that same logic its expansion date aligns far better with the Tang dynasty than with Western Xia: the Tang was founded 1407 years ago, nearly matching the formation date of D‑Y14813. Looking at the phylogenetic tree, even were the Western Xia imperial house to sit downstream of D‑Y14813, its demographic contribution to this Li‑associated clade would be close to zero; it would not represent the main population of this clade.

II. Misconceptions about the population size of the Tang imperial Li

Some assert that repeated massacres of Tang imperial clansmen late in the dynasty mean the Li house may have had few descendants. The Tang, however, enforced the rule: “imperial descendants lose clan status after five generations and become commoners”. Male imperial descendants were struck from the imperial genealogy register maintained by the Court of Imperial Clan Affairs after five generations from the founding ancestor, losing all imperial privileges. Many collateral branches of the Tang imperial house had become indistinguishable from ordinary commoners by the mid‑Tang. They necessarily multiplied and spread among the general population. Subsequent massacres could not target these already‑civilianized collateral lines. Over the Tang’s roughly 300‑year dynastic span, huge numbers of imperial descendants devolved into commoners. Sustained high fertility across three centuries makes it highly probable the Tang imperial Li constituted the largest single paternal lineage in the Central Plains during the Tang. Based on 2025 national male‑population statistics of 719.09 million men and 23Mofang’s modern‑sample analysis, D‑Y14813 accounts for approximately 0.12% of the national population, equivalent to around 900,000 living male descendants. This clade coalesces near the early Tang, represents the largest Central‑Plains clade of that time depth, and shows heavy concentration in Shaanxi.

III. Misconceptions about genealogies and surname‑change scenarios

Some online commentators cite supposed Western Xia‑linked genealogies among D‑Y14813 carriers. Such sources are neither verifiable nor falsifiable. These genealogies are indeterminate: their provenance and authenticity are unknown, so they cannot serve as evidentiary basis. By contrast, coalescence dates are computed from large sets of genotyped modern samples and constitute valid data. Without ancient DNA, private genealogies ought not to determine lineage attribution; genealogies represent unreliable, indeterminate evidence. Numerous Wei‑surname carriers fall within the D‑Y14813 Li‑associated clade. This has prompted speculation that they descend from Li Yuanhao’s descendants, since Li Yuanhao adopted the clan name Weiming (嵬名), and 嵬 (wéi) is a near-homophone of the surname 魏 (wèi). Yet these Wei lineages coalesce near the early Tang. Surviving Wei clan genealogies from Lanzhou record their surname Wei already before the Yuan dynasty; they are Han migrants from Shanxi into Gansu. It is highly unlikely they represent Weiming‑clan descendants changing their surname to Wei after the fall of Western Xia 400 years later. Deep coalescence of these Wei lineages near the root of D‑Y14813 suggests the Lanzhou Wei of Gansu likely bore the surname Wei from the clade’s initial expansion roughly 1500 years ago, and did not adopt Wei only after the Western Xia collapse in the Yuan period.

IV. Misconceptions about Western Xia Dangxiang chieftains

The phylogenetic tree of D‑Y14813 shows no correlation with the Western Xia polity. Its expansion falls within the Sui‑Tang period. Five hundred years prior to Western Xia, Tuoba Chici, ancestor of the Western Xia imperial line, had not yet moved into the northwest. That region was then the domain of Li Hu, foundational figure of the Tang, and the Guan‑Long military‑aristocratic bloc. Since the Western Wei, the Guan‑Long group controlled the traditional northwest of China: Guanzhong, Hexi, the Ordos and adjacent territories. Li Hu held the title Duke of Longxi of Gansu, with his seat near present‑day Dingxi, Gansu. Beyond inheriting the dukedom of Longxi, Li Hu’s sons occupied key northwest posts: Duke of Xiangwu in Gansu, Governor of Xiazhou in northern Shaanxi, Governor of Shuozhou in northern Shanxi, Governor of Lingzhou in Ningxia, and so on. At that time Tuoba Chici remained on the western Sichuan plateau in the southwest, separated by the Min and Qinling mountain ranges. A massive expanding Li‑associated clade D‑Y14813 arose within territory controlled by the Guan‑Long bloc. This clade must correspond to Li Hu: noble of the Guan‑Long group, whose descendants founded the Tang and multiplied continuously for centuries. It cannot correspond to Tuoba Chici, defeated Dangxiang chieftain dwelling far in the southwest. Tuoba Chici was routed by the Tang general Li Jing at Langdaopo on the Sichuan‑Gansu border, permanently losing any chance to advance north toward the Central Plains. Afterwards his group remained confined to the western Sichuan plateau southwest of the Min‑Qinling mountains.

V. Misconceptions regarding alternative candidate clades for the Tang imperial Li

From its rise to the fall of the Tang, the imperial Li house maintained continuous dynastic status for roughly 300 years. A family with uninterrupted demographic expansion across nearly three centuries must correspond to a major clade. Below I review prominent Li‑associated clades with coalescence dates between 1600 and 1200 years ago.

  1. O‑MF12803: Formed 1560 years ago, ~0.02% of modern Chinese males (~150,000 carriers). Far smaller population than D‑Y14813. Distribution leans east; frequencies are near zero in Guanzhong, the Tang heartland. Its downstream branches weakened from the mid‑Tang onward. D‑Y14813 has about 25‑fold higher representation in Shaanxi.
  2. O‑MF12819: Formed 1540 years ago, ~0.03% of modern Chinese males (~200,000 carriers). Distribution is predominantly east‑centered, concentrated in Henan, with some presence in Shaanxi. Its main‑branch expansion predates the Tang, so downstream development during the Tang is less clearly defined compared to D‑Y14813.
  3. O‑MF95500: Formed 1630 years ago, ~0.03% of modern Chinese males (~200,000 carriers). This western‑China Li‑associated clade shows partial alignment in time depth and has some Shaanxi representation, yet few of its downstream nodes date to the Sui‑Tang, indicating limited demographic growth in that era.
  4. O‑Y153220: Formed 1490 years ago, ~0.05% of modern Chinese males (~350,000 carriers). This is a southern‑origin Hakka Li lineage, with some Tang‑era growth, but its distribution is southern, likely expanding in Guangdong. It is a far weaker candidate for the Tang imperial Li than D‑Y14813.

These are the conclusions derived under the major‑clade‑expansion framework. Among Li‑associated clades matching the signature of large‑scale Tang‑era expansion and strong northwest distribution, D‑Y14813 stands as the best candidate.

Under the ancient‑sample empirical‑testing framework, by contrast, one rejects clade‑expansion‑based inference. In that view, D‑Y14813 is attributable neither to Western Xia nor to the Tang; its historical assignment remains open pending future ancient‑DNA results.

As of 2025, three Tang‑period individuals have been recovered archaeologically:

  1. Emperor Xizong of Tang (Li Xuan)
  2. Emperor Rang of Tang (Li Xian, Hui Mausoleum)
  3. Daye Zhen (nephew of Li Hu / Daye Hu, one of the Eight Pillars of Western Wei)

If ancient‑DNA results from these individuals match modern‑clade hypotheses, that would constitute valid evidence. If one nonetheless applies the clade‑expansion heuristic, D‑Y14813 is vastly more likely to represent the Tang imperial Li than the Western Xia. One extremely remote alternative remains: a lineage that expanded in the early Tang centuries later was absorbed into the Dangxiang and contributed to Western Xia. This scenario is, however, highly improbable.
