A New Research Perspective on the Methodological Approach to the D‑M174 Paternal Lineage
From the four basal paternal lineages downstream of CT‑M168—namely C‑M130, F‑M89, D‑M174, and E‑M96—I have chosen D‑M174 as the initial point of entry for my research in molecular anthropology. This choice was first motivated by my exposure, shortly after beginning to study molecular anthropology, to certain non-mainstream information channels. The intake of such information prompted me to reconsider several mainstream questions, and the novelty of reinterpreting existing data from a new perspective provided the impetus for writing these articles.
Secondly, D‑M174 itself appears to have experienced some unknown event at a very early stage that resulted in a population bottleneck effect. The consequence of this bottleneck is that, under conditions of a persistently small effective population size, the available genetic, physical, and cultural reference material for subsequent diversification has remained limited. Under the assumption that early culture, physical traits, and genetics were strongly coupled, the downstream branches of such a lineage, characterized by small effective population sizes, would tend to exhibit certain similarities in physical traits and cultural patterns. Intuitively, this seems easier to interpret than lineages of the same hierarchical level whose downstream populations possess large effective population sizes and display sharply divergent physical and cultural characteristics. If one were to begin research from those latter lineages, one would quickly find that far more ethnographic and population data would need to be collected and compared, thereby making the study of ultimate origins substantially more difficult.
However, as my research progressed, I gradually came to realize that in order to assemble any single fragment of the puzzle, one must first sketch out, in a blurred manner, the entire puzzle itself. Thus, although my work may appear to begin from a local lineage, the process necessarily involves constructing a vague overall framework, and it is this framework that ultimately resolves the original local questions. During this process of assembly and exploratory ambiguity, I consciously set aside areas that do not particularly interest me or that fall outside my expertise, such as detailed physical anthropology, archaeology, and highly specialized molecular genetics. I engage with these fields only when necessary and do not treat them as my primary research domains. If readers with expertise in these areas are willing to provide interpretations of the material I am less proficient in—particularly in relation to conclusions I may draw in the future—I would welcome attempts to integrate such interpretations with my own reasoning.
The reason for omitting parts of these knowledge systems is that my primary concern lies with origins and initial formation processes, rather than with exhaustive descriptive detail. For example, I may read works that I consider logically coherent in explaining how early human physical differences across regions initially formed, thereby constructing my own understanding of physical origins, but I do not concern myself with cataloging fine-grained anatomical distinctions. My decision to focus from the outset on older basal branches does not imply that my future writing will be confined to this material. Rather, it reflects my commitment to a research approach that explains local phenomena through a blurred overall structure. My work is not primarily concerned with comparisons among narrowly defined ethnic or familial sub-branches, which I regard as of limited significance. My ultimate aim is to satisfy my curiosity about the origins of human physical variation and the initial formation of physical differences across populations. Consequently, I avoid concentrating excessively on specific downstream sub-branches and instead treat older basal branches as my principal objects of study.
Generally speaking, acquiring basic knowledge about a paternal haplogroup involves compiling information on its geographic distribution, diversity patterns, population density, associated ethnic groups, ancient DNA samples and their approximate distribution, prehistoric lithic technologies, and burial customs. This includes examining population movements through cultural anthropology and autosomal interactions through molecular anthropology. However, this approach is overly fragmentary and can only serve as a supplementary tool. Possessing such information does not constitute deep understanding, nor does it fulfill the methodological goal of explaining local phenomena through a blurred overall framework. At best, it captures superficial features and can be addressed in passing. To assign it excessive importance would be to overestimate its research value, as many fundamental questions remain unanswered under this approach.
The work I intend to undertake instead involves reestablishing a holistic research pathway. The first step is to identify the maternal haplogroups that may have accompanied a given paternal haplogroup since its emergence. The method for doing so is necessarily the slow process of elimination, because paternal–maternal associations have always been fluid throughout history. Nevertheless, one point can be asserted with confidence: except in cases of near extinction or marginal lineages, maternal diversity patterns across populations are unlikely to change dramatically in short periods of time. These subtle traces require careful comparative analysis. By elimination, I mean first excluding maternal lineages that are clearly unrelated, which necessitates a broad, approximate survey of nearly all extant human maternal lineages worldwide. Although this may appear tangential, it is of immeasurable significance, as these seemingly peripheral data ultimately form the core of the final conclusions.
This information may include summaries of maternal lineages across regions associated with particular paternal lineages, with a particular focus on different regions, ethnicities, and tribal groups in the Far East. Through comparisons of diversity, distribution, and expansion times, one can initially identify which maternal branches are unrelated. This process must also involve the exclusion of other paternal lineages. Consequently, this stage requires compiling maternal lineage structures across South Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia, New Guinea, Australia, and the Americas. Summaries of lithic technologies associated with regions inhabited by the paternal lineage may also be included. If sufficient information exists to infer lineage-associated technologies through elimination, technological diffusion can further inform migration routes. Subsequently, brief analyses of cranial morphology, technological culture, and other data—such as blood group distributions, microbiomes, and distinctive genetic loci—may contribute additional insight into possible migration paths.
Once the maternal structures, ethnic compositions, blood group and microbiome patterns, cultural technologies, physical traits, and autosomal data of the entire Far Eastern region are broadly understood, it becomes possible to reverse-engineer or logically eliminate possibilities to infer migration routes for the paternal lineage in question. Ultimately, this returns us to the original objective: using associated maternal lineages, autosomal patterns, cranial morphology, cultural technologies, and newly emerging ancient DNA evidence to approximate the lineage’s migration routes, original homeland, and physical transformations. In the process, however, a vast amount of auxiliary material will have been assembled.
It is normal that the new directions I propose will conflict with viewpoints held by certain groups. As Thomas S. Kuhn observed, the prior conditions held by individuals shape their choice of paradigms. Paradigm selection is influenced by prior life experience, intuition, psychological disposition, prior knowledge, educational background, thinking style, cognitive preferences, problem awareness, and possibly even individual logical and abstract reasoning abilities. Acceptance of paradigms therefore varies across individuals. In the absence of a single theory achieving overwhelming dominance, paradigms that are easier for the general public to comprehend tend to prevail, even when their explanatory power regarding world phenomena is demonstrably flawed.
From a Bayesian perspective, individuals whose priors deviate substantially from reality are often unable to “see” additional empirical evidence. This occurs because extreme priors, combined with entrenched interpretive frameworks, lead to a revaluation of new evidence. Evidence is re-modeled within their interpretive framework and thus exhibits low updating power within their subjective models. Here, “new” evidence does not necessarily refer to data that emerge later in time. Its novelty is independent of temporal sequence. Rather, because the human brain does not process all available information exhaustively, individuals actively or passively select evidence through their paradigmatic filters, ultimately allocating attention selectively even to evidence that in principle possesses high likelihood.
The research direction I intend to pursue arises from my personal circumstances and certain contingent opportunities, which together have shaped my distinctive understanding of specific problems. This understanding has gradually formed my own interpretive framework within a given field. The priors underlying my current research serve merely as the starting point. As new evidence emerges and interacts with my initial understanding, my posterior beliefs will be formed. This is, in effect, an academic gamble. Yet every researcher steps onto the academic gambling table the moment they commit to a research trajectory. I do not know how far my current priors deviate from the true values. I can only collect data within my existing paradigm and allow time to judge the extent of deviation.
In a sense, the research I conduct and the conclusions I draw are addressed to future generations. I do not expect my work to be understood by contemporaries, as this would be unrealistic. The transmission of theory requires mastery of foundational information, and the present generation’s foundations are already deeply shaped by other paradigms. Transitioning to a new paradigm demands the acquisition of extensive new background knowledge, the cost of which is difficult to estimate. From this perspective, my articles are not, or not entirely, written for the present audience but for future readers. This is also why all of my writings are strictly dated: not only to track the evolution of my own thinking, but to allow future readers to recognize that certain ideas were conceived long before their eventual acceptance. Paradigm choice, ultimately, also rests on mass acceptance, which implies that I must accept that my paradigm will likely attract a limited audience both now and in the future.
Research in molecular anthropology is not my primary profession. I am not an institutional researcher, nor am I funded to conduct this work. My efforts are driven purely by personal interest, such as my initial fascination with the formation of physical differences among human populations worldwide. Molecular anthropology is merely one tool for investigating these questions. In using this tool, I have encountered conclusions not previously articulated by others, and I believe that such personally constructed syntheses are worth sharing publicly. Nevertheless, molecular anthropology remains only one instrument among others and is not my current primary research focus.
Because this work is not my profession, my research progress is necessarily slow. I estimate that I will devote one to two months per year to writing four to six articles, which I consider a reasonable workload. My higher education is also incomplete, and I have not undergone rigorous formal academic training. I have not systematically studied molecular genetics, nor do I possess formal disciplinary training in molecular anthropology. My sources are limited to materials accessible through open internet searches, and I lack access to unpublished institutional data.
However, I believe that my familiarity with anthropological literature exceeds that of most contemporary molecular anthropology researchers, and this constitutes my comparative advantage. Current institutional researchers in molecular anthropology demonstrate professional competence in the “molecular” component but often display a structural blind spot in “anthropology,” rendering their research incomplete. Applying professional molecular genetics alongside shallow anthropological understanding inevitably produces conclusions whose priors deviate substantially from reality, thereby suppressing evidence updating. Anthropology, after all, depends on the capacity to synthesize broad informational domains, a task many researchers are unable to perform simultaneously. Consequently, many institutional molecular anthropology researchers are, in essence, molecular geneticists rather than anthropologists.
Although I lack professional training in molecular genetics, I aim to compensate for this deficiency with deeper anthropological insight, addressing what I see as the most significant missing component in contemporary molecular anthropology. My goal is to restore molecular anthropology as a discipline capable of interpreting human phenomena. Accordingly, my writing emphasizes intellectual stimulation rather than definitive answers. I draw upon existing scholarship to establish sound research principles, reorganizing and recontextualizing data to reconstruct their relationships and meanings. I seek to redefine the research methodology and meta-questions of molecular anthropology—clarifying which questions are meaningful, valid, and valuable.
What I aim to do is not to invent new knowledge, but to selectively extract and reorganize the insights of particularly perceptive predecessors into a coherent system of new conclusions. This form of intellectual “puzzle-solving” requires vast information, basic logical competence, abstract reasoning ability, and associative thinking. Although I may be among the first to articulate this perspective publicly, I hope that future individuals of genuine intellectual talent will inherit and refine this viewpoint.
