The Qiangic languages in western Sichuan (WSC) are believed to be the oldest branch of the Sino-Tibetan linguistic family, and therefore, all Sino-Tibetan populations might have originated in WSC. However, very few genetic investigations have been done on Qiangic populations and no genetic evidences for the origin of Sino-Tibetan populations have been provided.
Archaeological investigation of the Jomon Culture is extensive and well supported among the Japanese public. The distinct pottery that characterizes the Jomon has been well documented and physical anthropological description of skeletal remains in Japan has a long and extensive history. However, questions remain of Jomon peoples origins, biological contribution to modern Japanese and biological relationship to the agriculturalist people associated with the Yayoi culture.
Japanese people are widely believed to be the descendants of the Jomon and Yayoi people. The dual-structure model, which attempts to explain the formation of the Japanese population, hypothesizes that the indigenous Jomon people migrated from the northern island of Hokkaido and the Ryukyu Islands to the other islands of Japan, where they resided before the Yayoi started to arrive in Kyushu (the westernmost main island of the Japanese archipelago) from the Korean peninsula.
Identifying genetic characteristics of the Gusuku period is indispensable to clarifying the colonizing process of the Ryukyu Islands and formation of the modern Ryukyu population. Understanding the phylogenetic relationship between Hokkaido Ainu and Ryukyu islanders has been of great interest in human genetics, ar chaeology, and anthropology. We examined short tandem repeat (STR) polymorphisms on autosomes a nd Y-chromosomes for Ainu, and compared this with data from Ryukyu islanders. A statistical test for nine autosomal (A-STR) loci gave no indication that the Ainu had experienced any bottleneck effect(s).
The height of Japanese youth raised in the northern region tends to be greater than that of youth raised in the southern region; therefore, a geographical gradient in youth body height exists. Although this gradient has existed for about 100 years, the reasons for it remain unclear. Consideration of the nutritional improvement, economic growth, and intense migration that has occurred in this period indicates that it is probably the result of environmental rather than nutritional or genetic factors.
