Wang Ming-ke (王明珂) (1952–)

Taiwanese Historian and Anthropologist

Wang Ming-ke (王明珂) is a Taiwanese historian and anthropologist associated with Academia Sinica. His research combines historical documents, oral memory and ethnographic fieldwork to examine how communities construct ethnic identity and understand relations between social centres and their perceived margins.

The Qiang occupy a central place in Wang’s scholarship. Rather than treating ethnic categories as timeless biological units, he studies how the name Qiang, collective memories, frontier environments and changing political relationships shaped identities over long periods. This approach has made his work important to both Qiang studies and the broader anthropology of ethnicity.
