Tatsuo Nishida (1928–2012)

Japanese Linguist and Philologist

Tatsuo Nishida was a Japanese linguist and professor at Kyoto University whose work transformed the study of Tangut and the wider Tibeto-Burman language family. Through the patient reconstruction of the Tangut script, phonology and lexicon, he helped make a difficult and fragmentary written tradition accessible to comparative linguistic research.

Nishida combined philological study of historical texts with comparison across living and documented Tibeto-Burman languages. His research extended beyond Tangut to the classification, history and writing systems of languages across the Himalayan and East Asian borderlands, making him one of the central figures in twentieth-century Tangut and Tibeto-Burman scholarship.
