Kyōsuke Kindaichi (1882–1971)
Japanese Linguist and Folklorist
Kyōsuke Kindaichi was a Japanese linguist whose long career was devoted to the documentation and analysis of the Ainu language. He conducted fieldwork, studied grammar and oral literature, and helped introduce Ainu epic traditions—especially yukar—to a wider scholarly readership.
His transcriptions and linguistic publications became foundational resources for later Ainu studies. They also belong to a specific historical setting in which Indigenous knowledge was frequently mediated through Japanese academic institutions, making his archive valuable both for its linguistic content and for critical study of the history of Ainu scholarship.
