Mitochondrial and Y-chromosome diversity of the prehistoric Koban culture of the North Caucasus

A D‑M533 lineage in the North Caucasus

This individual is the reason the source study singles him out. Fourteen skeletons of the Koban archaeological culture were analysed — five from the barrow Klin‑Yar 3 near Kislovodsk (excavated 1994–96) and nine from sites near the village of Zayukovo in Kabardino‑Balkaria. The Y‑haplogroups recovered are otherwise exactly what the Caucasus and Iron‑Age Europe would predict: E1a2a, G2a1a, R1b and R1a.

This man is the exception. His paternal line is D‑M533, a lineage the authors note “has been widely described in Eastern Asia.” His mitochondrial haplogroup HV1a1a is also unusual — HV entered Europe through the Caucasus after the Last Glacial Maximum.
