The Xisima burial ground

XSM‑M128‑1 comes from tomb 06XGSM128 at the Xisima site (西司马遗址), Sima village, Gaocun township, Xingyang, Henan. Eleven individuals from the site passed the ancient‑DNA authenticity test; this individual is one of five buried on a north–south axis and classed as minor nobility, as against the commoners buried east–west.

Tomb 06XGSM128 — position and form

The tomb lies in the southern part of the cemetery, in the middle of T0207. The mouth of the tomb passage is 0.30 m below the present surface, opening beneath layer ①, and cuts into sterile soil. Tomb orientation 190°. It is a rectangular vertical‑shaft passage tomb with a side chamber. The passage is rectangular in plan, with inward‑sloping walls and a flat floor: mouth 2.28 m long and 1 m wide, floor 2.23 m long and 1 m wide, the floor lying 0.85 m below the surface. The corridor is 0.76 m wide, 0.30 m deep, surviving to 0.56 m. The chamber is near‑rectangular with straight walls and a flat floor, 1.82 m long, 0.96 m wide, surviving to 0.56 m. The occupant lay supine with flexed limbs; head and face orientation could not be determined. A single iron belt hook was placed at the right side of the waist.
