Ancient genomes from the initial Jomon period: new insights into the genetic history of the Japanese archipelago

Higashimyo Shell Midden, Saga

Higashimyo012 is the paper’s skeletal sample 012: an isolated right lower first molar excavated from the Higashimyo Shell Midden (東名遺跡) in Saga City, Kyushu. The individual was genetically identified as male. The paper reports mitochondrial haplogroup M7a1a*, at the basal position of M7a1a; this database records the paternal lineage as D‑M55.

The site dates to approximately 7,460–7,980 BP, at the end of the Initial Jomon period. The original report stresses that the isolated tooth cannot be associated with a particular excavated skeleton.
